The Baltimore Flute Choir has been selected to perform at the 2025 National Flute Association Convention. The convention, a premier professional gathering in the flute world, draws thousands of flutists each year, including artists at the peak of the field. This year, the convention will be held from August 7–10 in Atlanta.
Flute ensembles applied for a performance opportunity at the convention in November, submitting recordings of prior performances and proposed programs. The BFC was not only selected, but offered an expanded time slot—a 45-minute program—in one of the main performance halls.
The choir is excited to bring to Atlanta the world premiere of “Nevermore”, a new work written for the BFC by Gay Kahkonen. “Nevermore” is a major piece based on Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” and features all levels of the BFC’s flutes: there are 2 piccolo parts, 4 different alto flute parts, and parts for bass and contrabass flutes. Kahkonen, a Pittsburgh-area composer, wrote two other works the BFC will perform in Atlanta, “Wish” and “Whirl”. Each of these pieces reflects a radically different musical styles and mood from the others.
In preparation for its performance at the NFA Convention, the BFC plans several concerts in the Baltimore area for early summer, so check back to our website for details later this spring.
